5 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Crafts for Kids and Parents

As one of the first holidays of the year, MLK Jr. Day is much more than just a day off of school. It's a time of reflection--on where our nation used to be, where we are, and we we're headed. Consider celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.'s efforts and reflecting within yourself as well. Talk about these important issues with your family, and create a craft that helps instill your ideals within your children.

5 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Crafts for Kids and Parents:

1. Peace Doves

This one is sweet as well as powerful. It's simplicity, with colorful wings and stark white body, makes this dove a striking craft. Children can hang these in their bedrooms or in a prominent place where they'll be reminded to promote peace in their everyday lives.

2. Peace Hand prints

I'm not sure who made this one, but I like it because of the strong imagery. Consider inviting your children's friends over in order to do this project and share the message of hope and peace with them, too.

3. MLK Magazine Collage

Great idea, right? Strong imagery with the silhouette and promotes self awareness and the instilling of ideals within your children as they find words and phrases on their own that--to them--promote peace and love. I can't think of a better way to give your old magazines new life.

4.  Fingerprint Peace Dove

This craft idea is great because, again, the strong imagery, but also the fact that everyone works together to do it. Whether you do it as a family, or invite your children's friends over to complete it, the idea of promoting peace together--that love starts with us--is powerful.

5. "How Would You Change the World" Activity

Don't forget this idea. When you talk with your children about peace and love, brainstorm ways to show that peace and love with the world. Because it's not enough to know that you believe in those things--the world must see it and be changed by it.
